TREKKING

Initial path of trekking with less steeper steps

Trekking to Gadaikallu is a thrilling yet demanding experience. The journey involves climbing nearly 1,800 steps hewn into solid rock, making it a moderately challenging trek that truly tests one's endurance. Despite the strenuous ascent, the effort is well worth it—trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Western Ghats and lush, green landscapes, especially vibrant during the monsoon season.

Rising to an elevation of about 1,700 feet, the trek typically takes 2–3 hours to complete. At the summit, you'll find a small room-like structure and the weathered ruins of an old fort, steeped in history. While the steep incline and rugged terrain may be daunting for beginners, this trek is ideal for intermediate hikers looking to immerse themselves in nature, history, and a touch of adventure. Sturdy footwear, sufficient water, and proper preparation are highly recommended.

Out of the 1800 steps, the first 1000 are relatively gentle, guiding us gradually along the path. The trail winds around a massive granite boulder until we reach its base. From there, the final stretch is carved directly into the rock—steep and demanding.

We visited Gadaikallu in early June, just before the monsoon set in. The temperature was already soaring when we began our trek at 6:30 AM. It took us about two hours to reach the summit, where we spent another hour exploring the rocky terrain. By the time we began our descent, the sun was directly overhead, and the intense heat made the return journey especially draining. We were nearly out of energy by the time we reached the bottom.
